By: Roray Kam
June 27 kicked off the first part of the 2015 RK Sunshine SUP Series, hosted by Island Water Sports and brought in over 100 racers, the youngest racer 12 years old and the oldest 75 from everywhere in Florida, the US and even the Caribbean, some racers the top in the Nation.
Race Directors, Roray Kam and Victoria Burgess, bring this standup paddle board race series twice a year to Pompano Beach, which features a 3 mile rec race and a 6 mile elite race that brings in some of the fastest paddlers in the nation. The course includes buoy turns and a beach run in between laps.
The race started calm however the winds kicked in from a storm over land and presented fun but challenging conditions.
Kieran Grant, in Elite mens 14′, held a strong lead the entire race finishing at 57:33. Behind him was local, Jake Portwood at 1:00:19 and Josh Smart at 1:03:17.
The Womens’ 12’6 was taken by Victoria Burgess with a strong finish at 1:07:18, and followed by Lizi Ruiz, 1:12:07 and Mary Anne Boyer 1:12:35
The 12’6 Elite mens class was a battle. Fisher Grant took the win at 1:03:39, with Mark Athanacio, 1:04:20 and Zach Rousanville, 1:05:59, tailing close behind.
After the main races, there are kids races, tandem races, board demos and more.
We strive to bring the ALOHA and true meaning of the love for the ocean to everyone through this race, in and out of the water. It is truly a fun filled beach day for everyone.
The next race will be held on Pompano Beach, August 22, 2015.
