Free Rivers Fund Grantees 2025 & Annual Report 2024
The Free Rivers Fund has announced its 2025 grantees, supporting 12 projects dedicated to protecting free-flowing rivers worldwide. This year’s selection includes initiatives from New Zealand to Nepal, featuring kayakers, citizen activists, and environmental advocates. This year, the Free Rivers Fund received over 350 applications, with more than 100 meeting the criteria—making this year’s selection process highly competitive. The increasing number of qualified applications highlights the growing need for this type of funding and reinforces efforts to expand the fund for future support. This year, 12 grantees from around the world have been selected, including seven new projects and five previously supported initiatives.
The 2025 Grantees are:
Save the Kaituna, Whitewater NZ, New Zealand
Save the Karnali Campaign, Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT), Nepal
Keep Santa Cruz River free to the sea, Guillermo Tamburini Beliveau, Argentina
No to the Rucalhue Power Plant, Malen Leubu, Rio Biobio, Chile
Save the Rappenalpbach, Yannik Bavendiek, Germany
Life of the Usumacinta River, Alianza Ríos Mayas, México / Guatemala
Protection of the Seta River, Çidhna dhe Kastriotët, Albania
Stop Skavica – Save the Drin River, Dibra Activists, Albania
Save Western Jiu River, Călin Dejeu, România
Nicoleta Nour, Sava River, Slovenia
Varig vern av Raundalselva, Norway
Aetomilitsa Residents Initiative, Sarantaporos River, Greece
Spanning from Greece to Guatemala and New Zealand to Nepal, these projects include diverse efforts such as legal battles, grassroots activism, and scientific initiatives. The grantees range from kayaking communities and citizen-led movements to Serbian pensioners and a Mapuche women’s collective.
